Emergency repair of Parker V14 valves

A major offshore operation faced a complete shutdown when six specialised Parker V14 main-winch control valves required urgent repair. HydTec reverse-engineered and manufactured the necessary components, developed dedicated test methods, restored the critical settings, and verified every valve—helping the customer resume operations and avoid a potentially enormous financial impact.

Repair Test verification

Challenge

A major offshore operation was at a complete standstill because six specialised Parker V14 main-winch control valves could not be returned to service using standard parts or procedures. Several offshore contractors and supply-vessel operations were affected.

Delivery

HydTec reverse-engineered the valves, produced new drawings and specifications, manufactured new valve blocks and cartridge housings, developed a dedicated test block, restored the individual settings, resealed, assembled and pressure-tested all six units.

Results

All six valves passed HydTec’s workshop verification, including casing tests at 200 bar, pilot cut-off adjustment to 131 bar and pressure testing of the fully assembled valve units at 420 bar. The customer subsequently confirmed successful operation by telephone.

Initial assessment

HydTec was contacted when six specialised Parker V14 valves from a main-winch system required an immediate solution. The shutdown affected a wider offshore operation involving several support vessels, contractors and offshore companies.

With no ready-made repair route available, a customer representative travelled from South America to HydTec’s workshop in Sweden and remained on site throughout the work. Continued downtime could have resulted in the cancellation of the operation, with the potential financial exposure described as reaching hundreds of millions of US dollars.

Communication

The customer’s representative was present at HydTec’s workshop and followed the progress closely, allowing technical questions and decisions to be handled without delay.

HydTec produced detailed manufacturing drawings, specifications, recorded test values, a repair procedure, a service report and test documentation. Successful operation after installation was confirmed by the customer by telephone; no written operational follow-up was received.

HydTec technical drawings and blueprints spread out on a workbench, alongside a blue parts storage tray containing small mechanical components.

Design & Engineering

Each valve was identified individually, and its existing mechanical and hydraulic characteristics were recorded before disassembly. Because no standard repair solution or complete replacement assembly was available, HydTec reverse-engineered the original 8F5814 valve block and cartridge housing. New CAD models, manufacturing drawings and a custom repair specification were then produced.

HydTec also developed a dedicated test block and a new workshop test method to reproduce the valves’ function outside the machine. This made it possible to reproduce and verify critical characteristics of the original valves, including internal spring preload and pilot cut-off pressure. The fully assembled valve units were pressure-tested at 420 bar.

Manufacturing

New valve blocks, cartridge housings and associated adjustment components were manufactured on an express basis. Serviceable original control components were retained where appropriate, and each valve was reassembled using new seals.

All six valves were tested individually and the results documented before release. To minimise transport risk, the valves were divided into two separate shipments of three, carried on two different aircraft. This meant that the customer could recover 50% of the system’s capacity even if one shipment was delayed or disrupted.

Installation & commissioning

The customer installed the valves at the offshore operation. HydTec did not install them on site. The customer subsequently confirmed by telephone that the repaired valves operated correctly.

Follow up & support

HydTec remained available for technical support following delivery. The customer later confirmed by telephone that the repaired valves were operating successfully.
